Originally, Dalmazan was a capital of the Carolingian administration, at the head of the Dalmazanes corresponding to the valley of Arize. The monks of the abbey of Alet build a priory. An ecclesiastical enclosure develops on the banks of the Arize. The existence of a parish is attested in 1156 by the stone of consecration. Classified as a historic monument in 1907, the church of Daumazan is dedicated to Saint-Sernin, the first Christian martyr of Roman Gaul after Ste-Blandine of Lyon, in the year 250. It is the most beautiful building of Romanesque art Ariège, where the influence of the Toulouse Romanesque workshop is noted.
