The Real Casa de Moneda
The first location to be re-created virtually is the Real Casa de Moneda. Built by King Philip II in 1583 it is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most important pieces of industrial architecture in Europe. It was recently renovated and outfitted with a museum that includes original machinery and teaches visitors about the minting process. The building hosts working historical machinery located on both the inside and exterior including a fully functional water wheel, money press, furnace and other historical pieces.
The Cathedral of Segovia
Segovias Cathedral, built by King Charles I, is one of the last Gothic buildings to be built in Spain and the third of its line as the first two were destroyed. It was designed by one of the most prestigious architects of its time Juan Gil de Hontañón. It has a large temple consisting of three “ships”, with chapels on the sides and a semicircular “head” with more chapels in a radial layout. The first stone was laid on June 8, 1525 and it was completed in 1615. Among the treasures kept there is said to be the Sinodal de Aguilafuente (1472), the first book to be printed in Spain.
The Alcazar of Segovia
The Alcazar of Segovia is one of its most prominent monuments and one of the most visited in Spain. It is located in the Old City and was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1985. Over the years it has been a Roman castro, medieval fortress, royal palace, custodian of the royal treasury, state prison, Royal College of Artillery and General Military Archive. It is one of the most distinctive of all of Europe castles by virtue of its ship’s bow shape. It rises over the valley of the Eresma and it showcases the splendor of the Castilian Court during the Middle Ages.
This project is a great example of how technology can be put at the service of history, which is especially appropriate in the case of the Real Casa de Moneda since it was always characterized by housing the most advanced technology.
